Overview
The undergraduate program in Social Work, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Social Work, is designed to prepare students for entry-level, generalist social work practice in urban social service agencies and organizations, and for graduate social work education. The program fulfills the requirements of the New York State Education Department and is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Since the program is accredited, program graduates may apply for advanced standing status in a graduate program in social work. Social work courses required for the major are available in both day and evening sections; some weekend classes may also be available.
All Social Work majors must complete the 55 credits in the basic program; a minor is not required. No credit for life experience will be given for the required Social Work courses.
The program is a 55-Credit Major

Undergraduate Admissions
The Spring 2024 Undergraduate Social Work Application will go live on March 1st, 2024. This application is in addition to the application to Lehman College. Students must be accepted into Lehman College, before submitting application. Declaring Social Work as a Major does not mean that the student is in the program. Along with admission to the college, students must have the following four criteria items before submitting an application:
- Minimum of 54 college credits
- Minimum cumulative index of 2.7; (2.9 is recommended)
- Completion of Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare (SWK 237)
- Completion of Foundations of Sociology (SOC 166)
Students may complete the requirements at Lehman or the equivalent courses at another college if the credits are transferable.
Transfer students must include with their application to the Social Work Program all transcripts from colleges previously attended; student copies of transcripts are acceptable. Transfer students who have a lower cumulative index than 2.7 may apply to the Social Work Program after completing 12 credits at Lehman and achieving a 2.7 cumulative index.
Application forms are available in the Social Work Department office, Carman Hall, Room B18. Applications, including transcripts, should be submitted as early as possible during the semester preceding entry into the program. To discuss eligibility for admission and to plan your program, contact Catherine Cassidy, Undergraduate Social Work Program Coordinator, in Carman Hall, Room B-18, or call 718-960-6782. All students are encouraged to consult the Pre- and Co-Requisite Guide when planning their program.
