School Counselor Certification Process (NYS, National)

School Counseling Certification: Initial and Internship Cert as of Feb 24:

Every certificate from the NYSED has its own set of requirements. It is very important to research and seek out the requirements through the state's website as well as through the college's Certification Office.

The college is required by the state to verify specific requirements before recommendations (online verification) can be submitted. After a recommendation is submitted, it is then the state that will have a final review and approve the issuance of certificates.

Below are the requirements for the certificates School Counselors can be recommended for:

Initial Certification- the base certificate all students must obtain after graduation.

  • Official Graduation- from the SC program- students must be officially approved for graduation on their record by the Registrar Dept.

  • Mandated workshops (3)-
  • TEACH Online Svcs Account- This account will be permanent for the rest of their career as a SC or even a teacher. They will need to periodically update their educational background, personal information, work experience (after certification), apply/pay for any certificates, etc. It is everything about your state certification and they must have their fingerprints on file in this account

  • College Recommendation for the Initial- After the above requirements are completed, please contact the Certification Office to request a college recommendation submission for the initial certificate. This confirms to the state that you have completed the above requirements. The state will then take over for their final review before approving the issuance. Instructions to apply for the initial certificate with a program code will be provided at this time.

  • Exam- The required exam is the CST: School Counselor(#193) Click on the hyperlink to get all information about the exam including the only preparation material the state provides. Exam schedules are only provided to applicants when they register for the exam. The exam should be completed by graduation.

  • Must have 50% of coursework completion within their SC program- Advisor must approve this completion- see attached (2nd page)

  • Must have proof of securing an SC position with a letter from the school Principal identifying the position.

  • Mandated workshops (3)-
  • TEACH Online Svcs Account- This account will be permanent for the rest of their career as a SC or even a teacher. They will need to periodically update their educational background, personal information, work experience (after certification), apply/pay for any certificates, etc. It is everything pertaining to your state certification and they must have their fingerprints on file in this account

College Recommendation for the Internship Certificate- After the above requirements are completed and submitted to the Certification Office via (teacher.certification@lehman.cuny.edu), the college recommendation for the internship certificate will then be submitted to the state.
