From the Director
Welcome to the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute, housed at Lehman College. Since our foundation in 2012, the institute has played an essential role in amplifying the presence of Mexico and the Mexican community in New York City. We’ve accomplished this through our many initiatives, all of which are designed to fulfill our mission and elevate the face of Mexico in the United States. Our institute is comprised of faculty, students, staff, and affiliated community-based organizations working on education, research, culture, arts, and empowerment. Bienvenidos al Instituto de Estudios Mexicanos de CUNY, hospedado en Lehman College. Desde nuestra Fundación en 2012, el instituto ha desempeñado un papel vital en el crecimiento de la presencia de México y la comunidad mexicana en Nueva York. Lo anterior gracias a todas nuestras iniciativas, creadas con el objetivo de cumplir con nuestra misión y enaltecer el nombre de México en Estados Unidos. A nuestro equipo se suman estudiantes, universidades, y organizaciones comunitarias que trabajan en las áreas de educación, investigación, arte, cultura, y empoderamiento. Mission Statement
Founded in 2012, the mission of the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute at Lehman College (CUNY MSI) is to boost enrollment of Mexican and Mexican-American students in CUNY to promote equity through academic achievement; foster research with a focus on Mexico and Mexicans in the United States, especially in NY; empower the immigrant community by collaborating with community-based organizations and public institutions to support.
BECARI@ Success Story – Amalia Rojas
In early 2023, Amalia’s play, “How to MELT ICE,” ran in the Julio de Burgos Performance and Arts Center under the co-production of Boundless Theatre Company & New Perspectives Theatre Company. Amalia graduated with a B.A. degree in Theatre with Minor Studies in Political Science & Mexican Studies from Herbert H. Lehman College in CUNY. Currently, she is enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program at Columbia University in NY. Recently, Amalia was awarded as one of the “inaugural recipients of the Lorraine Hansberry Initiative fellowship,” announced by the Lily Awards Foundation.
