May Student of the Month: Chanel Huston Takes Center Stage

May Student of the Month

Chanel Huston Takes Center Stage

May 12, 2026

Hi everyone, my name is Chanel Huston, and I’m so excited to share that I was recently named a semifinalist for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program. I am a Multimedia Performing Arts: Theatre major at Lehman College, where I also study speech-language pathology. I am a dramatic, character-driven actor with notable range, a strong command of the stage, and a clear inclination toward cross-disciplinary work.

During my time at Lehman, I have taken on roles both on and off the stage. In The Amen Corner, I held the lead role in a production that resonated deeply with audiences, particularly women of color who saw their own lives reflected in the story. My capstone project, American Descendants of Enslaved Africans, supported by the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA), explored identity while fostering cultural understanding of the history and experiences of Black Americans as a distinct cultural group rooted in the United States. I also worked as a supporting project coordinator and grant writer for Elders of Parkchester, an intergenerational arts initiative that gave Bronx seniors the opportunity to share their stories through creative expression. I previously founded and led a student initiative, The Unit, focused on collaboration across arts departments. In my spare time, I have volunteered at New York-Presbyterian and Montefiore hospitals, where I advocated for patient rights and assisted occupational therapists in supporting pediatric clients as they develop motor skills through therapeutic play. I was also selected as a recipient of the Gilman Scholarship, a nationally competitive award supporting students pursuing study abroad.

Looking ahead, I plan to continue refining my craft through advanced classical training, with the goal of building a career across stage and screen. I see acting not just as performance, but as a way to shape how people understand and treat one another. Through my work, I hope to create characters that feel real, complex, and impossible to ignore, using storytelling to deepen empathy and leave a lasting impression on global audiences.
