On July 27, 1969, the Young Lords led a NYC neighborhood community in what came to be known as “Garbage Offensive”, an event foreshadowing the first 1970 Earth Day. This story brings to life the diversity of American experience for young readers. However, many people today do not know who the Young Lords were and how they addressed environmental racism. The historical fiction picture book, Vicki and a Summer of Change! ¡Vicki y un Verano de Cambio! (2020) is one example of how counternarratives serve as curriculum resources for elementary classrooms to explore multiple layers of perspective central to Black and Brown communities.
