Our Initiatives

Educational Opportunities Initiative

The EOI aims to increase educational attainment. It provides New Yorkers in underserved communities with guidance to navigate different pathways to access and find financial aid in all levels of education at city and state schools and learning centers. We provide them with orientation both online, and in person at Lehman College and the Mexican Consulate in New York.

Feria Internacional del Libro de NYC

FILNYC is a cultural project aimed at promoting and disseminating the Spanish language on the United States’ East Coast. The book fair hosts writers, publishers, translators, and scholars to discuss the state of the book industry and the Spanish language on panels centered around the Institute’s annual thematic line.

Mexican Studies Scholarship Fund

Provides scholarships to New Yorkers with outstanding participation in their communities. The initiative’s goal is to give recipients the necessary tools, and skills to succeed in their professional careers and to make a significant impact on society.

Mexican Studies Oral History Project

Produced in partnership with Bronxnet, this interview series with the men and women who witnessed and authored the history of the Mexican community captures the richness that immigrants bring to NYC.

Indigenous Languages

The program is part of the Indigenous and Diasporic Language Consortium and done in partnership with the Institute for Latin American Studies at Columbia University and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU. Students enrolled in either institution can take one of these courses and receive foreign language credit.

Mexican Studies Archives and Library

The MSAL goal is to identify, acquire, organize, preserve, and provide scholars with access to valuable sources of Mexican historical research. Our MSAL serves as the main engine for our core purpose, which is generating data and information on Mexican history and its present both inside and outside of the United States.

Research

The Institute’s main goal is to produce research about Mexico and the Mexican diaspora in the United States, with an emphasis in New York City. We collaborate, sponsor and aid in the generation of new data to be used by scholars, academics of all levels, students, and the public.

The Bronx Education & Literacy Initiative

A community-based project focused on accessing the power of multiple literacies. The program engages the power of literacy in its many forms to drive academic success; develop civic engagement; and teach financial wellness. The project benefits Bronx youth and families

Civic Engagement Initiative

Aims to activate  community participation, promote voter registration to further enfranchise young Mexican-Americans, and ensure that students have easy and equal access to participate in every election.

Summer Institute

Engages Bronx educators from local high schools in experiential professional development to improve pedagogical practices to teach multi-language learners.

Cátedra de Estudios de México

Aims to deepen knowledge of Mexico and its bilateral relationship with the U.S. while strengthening the connections between universities. It is the first New York institution to establish the Fulbright Mexico Studies Chair, providing students the chance to engage with eminent Mexican scholars.

Dreaming Out Loud

A collaboration between PEN America and the Mexican Studies Institute. It offers tuition-free creative writing workshops to undocumented students from 25 CUNY campuses. The program culminates in the publication of their work in an anthology coordinated by prominent writers.
