Message from Dean, Dr. Pamela Mills

Dean Pamela MillsThe School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS) at Lehman College is comprised of ten departments: Anthropology; Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences; Mathematics; Physics and Astronomy; Political Science; Psychology; and Sociology.

In keeping with the College's mission, the departments of SNSS are dedicated to fostering a stimulating academic environment in which our diverse student population can actively engage in discovering, modeling, and interpreting natural and social reality. Our diverse faculty includes globally renowned mathematicians, natural scientists, physical scientists, and social scientists. Collectively, they have brought in over $25 million in research grants over the last decade, funded by Federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Defense.

These funds have gone to producing ground breaking research in various areas of the natural and social sciences, including Lehman College's effort to educate students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. One of our top goals is to include our students in the research endeavor, the vast majority of which are first generation college students who come from neighborhoods in the Bronx. We aim to engage our students in the institutions of New York City while they are Lehman with the goal of providing pathways to a successful career. To that end, SNSS has built strong partnerships with New York Botanical Garden, American Museum of Natural History, many community colleges and High Schools in the Bronx, and other institutions of higher education.

As Dean of SNSS, I am so proud of the work our faculty and students are doing. I encourage you to learn more about our efforts and join us in making Lehman College and the Bronx great.

The mission of the School of Natural and Social Sciences (NSS) is to educate students in the natural sciences, social sciences, computer science and mathematics. NSS consists of ten departments where the common goal is to provide students with an excellent liberal arts education as embodied in the disciplines and transform student’s lives and their communities while preparing students to be engaged members and leaders of a globalized economy and technologically savvy world.
