8 Dimensions of Wellness

The Eight Dimensions of Wellness is a wellness model that encourages you to consider all aspects of wellness, not just physical health. Wellness is an active process that requires you to explore and invest in all dimensions of wellness. The Eight Dimensions of Wellness are:

Emotional wellness is one’s ability to understand and manage their emotions. It involves developing healthy ways to handle stressors and challenges.

Tips: Journal, talk to someone you trust, learn about emotional intelligence, practice mindfulness, and ask for help when you need it.

*Stop by the Wellness Center to claim your FREE “Chill Pack” containing items to help you practice emotional wellness. Each pack has a journal, stress relief toy/ball, snack and other items to help you take care of your emotional wellness.

Environmental wellness is your relationship with the environment around you, including your ability to create and maintain spaces that contribute to your wellbeing while being aware of your impact on the environment.

Tips: Keep your physical space organized, spend time outside in nature, recycle and reuse when possible, participate in activities that help improve campus and your community.

*Check out the Wellness calendar for events that help you practice environmental wellness.

Financial wellness is your ability to develop a healthy relationship with money. It involves increasing your financial literacy to make good decisions about money, investing, and spending.

Tips: Create a budget for yourself, track your spending, and attend financial literacy workshops to increase your knowledge.

*Attend a #GOALS workshop at the Wellness Center to increase your financial literacy and wellness. Topics include basics of savings, building credit, credit vs debit card, and budgeting.

Intellectual wellness is investing in your learning and growth. Keeping your brain active and challenging yourself is a key aspect of intellectual wellness.

Tips: Read something new, engage in discussions with classmates on a new topic, learn a new skill, practice a hobby, or take a class that you’ve never done before.

*Lehman has many options to help you engage with this area of wellness. Aside from academic classes, there are many clubs, organizations and offices that offer opportunities for you to challenge yourself and grow. Don’t be afraid to explore and learn more!

Occupational wellness is finding purpose, satisfaction, and balance in your work, academics, and future career. It includes participating in activities that reflect your personal and professional values and goals.

Tips: Create academic and career goals, seek out a mentor, explore internships and other opportunities, and build your skills and talents.

* Choosing a career is an exciting journey, and it’s totally normal for it to feel a little overwhelming. To make the best decision, it helps to think about your interests, strengths, skills, values, goals, and personality.

It organizes your interests, skills, abilities, and values into a clear summary that connects directly to real-world careers. You’ll also receive a list of recommended career options based on your results. When creating the account, use the code 'lightning'.

After completing the assessment, be sure to schedule an appointment with your career specialist at the Career Exploration and Development Center through Navigate so you can review your results and plan your next steps.

Physical wellness is maintaining a healthy body by practicing good habits such as getting enough sleep, proper nutrition, exercise and getting routine health checks.

Tips: Get enough sleep each night, eat balanced meals throughout the day, include regular movement in your routine, and don’t skip your yearly physical with your healthcare provider.
