How COIL Works
Faculty Partnership
Faculty members from different countries collaborate to design a joint project
Shared Projects
Students in the paired courses work together on assignments or projects, which can include problem-solving, research, writing, or discussions. It could a simple one-time assignment, or a semester-long project.
Technology-Enabled
Online tools facilitate communication and collaboration between students and faculty from different cultures and locations. Collaborative work can be done synchronously or asynchronously.
Structured Phases
A typical COIL experience may involve phases like:
- Icebreaker: Students get to know each other and build trust.
- Organization: Students share perspectives and form international teams.
- Collaboration: Students work on their joint project.
- Reflection: Students present their outcomes and reflect on their learning.
