In medicine in general, and in reproduction in particular, there has been a long history of health providers ignoring, downplaying or dismissing women’s bodily pain and discomfort. Recently, sociologists have begun to apply the term medical gaslighting to analyze such experiences.

This discussion builds on this research to use the lens of medical gaslighting to explore women’s experiences getting and having an IUD.
