Futures in Finance Initiative at Lehman
What is Futures in Finance?
In August 21, 2021, CUNY Futures in Finance (FIF), “a comprehensive workforce development initiative to cultivate and train CUNY students for careers in the financial industry” was stablished at the City University of New York in partnership with financial firms Bloomberg LP, Centerbridge Partners and Goldman Sachs. The goal of this initiative is to “provide talented CUNY students with training, mentorship and access to the financial services industry, giving them a competitive edge in one of New York City’s largest employment sectors.”
Lehman College was one of the three CUNY senior colleges selected for this initiative. The program aims to:
- “Enable firms from across the New York City financial services community to connect with a pool of strong and diverse local talent at CUNY.
- Provide students with a range of resources, training, internship opportunities and guidance from local financial industry experts.
- Build staff capacity at CUNY by funding career-development professionals who will be dedicated to this initiative.”
Staff of FIF works with the staff of School of Business and Career Exploration and Development Center at Lehman College to bring opportunities to students.
Some FIF student Success Stories …
Fatou Kabba: A major in Accounting (BSc), Fatou will be graduating in December 2022 and will be joining will be New York Presbyterian to interview for a full-time position as an Internal Auditor. In the Summer of 2022, Fatou joined Futures in Finances Summer Accelerator, powered by ProjectBasta. After the Summer Accelerator, Fatou’s resume was selected by FIF Partner, New York Presbyterian to interview, and was offered the full-time position. During her time at Lehman College, Fatou is also a member of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA).
Jeremy Burgos: A junior accounting major at Lehman College, Jeremy joined Futures in Finance in the Summer 2022 as a participant in the Summer Accelerator. In addition to participating in the FIF Summer Accelerator, Jeremy was also doing an Externship with PWC in their Consulting department. After the 2022 Summer Accelerator, Jeremy attended the Futures in Finance Career Day where he connected with many employers. This was followed by interviews with with six companies and four offers. During Winter 2023, Jeremy will be interning with Deloitte in their Audit & Assurance division, and in the Summer of 2023, he will be interning with Citi in their Risk Management division.
According to Jeremy, “CUNY Futures in Finance helped give me exposure into the financial services industry by connecting me with a variety of industry professionals and their experience within their roles. As well as the chance to tour Goldman Sachs. The opportunity provided me with the clarity I needed to pursue a career in the financial services industry. Their Career Day event allowed me to network with companies for a summer internship opportunity. I connected with a Lehman College alum that assisted me throughout my interview process at Citi. I took advantage of the resources FIF provides for applying and interviewing to receive multiple internships offers.”
