English as a Second Language Placement
According to CUNY guidelines, “applicants who have spent at least six months or more in an institution where English is not the primary language of instruction, or took ESL classes in high school, are flagged as potential ESL via the CUNY admissions process.” At Lehman, ESL applicants will be required to take Accuplacer ESL to determine reading and writing proficiency and appropriate course placement.
Students who are required to take the Accuplacer ESL must do so prior to completing registration for classes.
Preparing for the Accuplacer ESL Tests
Applicants can prepare for the Accuplacer ESL tests by accessing the official FREE ACCUPLACER Study App. To see sample questions and answer explanations, register here.
Students who are accepted to CUNY but need to improve their academic English skills before taking college courses will be invited to enroll in the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP).
CLIP is a low-cost program offering students a 14 to 16-week English immersion course. Courses meet five hours a day, five days a week, in day or evening sessions, and are offered in-person, online, or hybrid (hybrid is a combination of in-person and online).
For more information about the CLIP program, visit CUNY CLIP information page.
