• CUNY is undergoing a major multi-year “state of good repair” plan across the entire system and identified Carman as a priority project for repair. The HVAC that operates on the cellar, basement, second and third floors will be replaced.
• The project includes a new fresh air system that is primarily located in the hallways, as well as replacement of unit ventilators which are located at the windows inside of classrooms and offices.
• While some preliminary scoping work has begun, construction will not begin until January 2027.
• The first floor will remain open. It was an addition to Carman and runs on a separate HVAC system.
• We are working on plans to keep the Multimedia Center open during construction.

The project is expected to begin in January 2027 and should take twelve months to complete.

CUNY’s Division of Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York are overseeing this construction project. CUNY/DASNY have already awarded the contract and chosen the contractor. Lehman College’s facilities team is working closely with both groups to ensure that construction proceeds smoothly and that the campus community receives timely updates.

Everything being done in Carman follows all applicable safety and health requirements.

We hope to fully reopen Carman for the Spring 2028 semester. Any changes to the timeline will be communicated to the community.

No. We expect the Carman cafeteria to close during construction. Portions of that space may be reconfigured to accommodate student needs to take Zoom classes.

• The Provost and Registrar are working with deans and department chairs to plan course schedules, locations, and formats for Spring 2027 and beyond.

No. Unfortunately, ongoing projects and other campus constraints prevent us from connecting trailers to electricity and water, making them unsuitable for classroom or administrative office use, especially during the winter.

• We plan to use this opportunity to make additional repairs and upgrades to Carman. This may include addressing leaks, hallway upgrades, elevator repairs, classroom and furniture upgrades, adjunct faculty space, and more.
• Bathrooms are already in the middle of an ongoing project.

• Maintaining personal, on-campus interaction is a top priority. Most classes taught in Carman Hall will be relocated to available classroom space throughout the campus. As we get closer to the Spring semester, the registrar will post classroom assignments.
• We will also modify class dates and times to maintain as many in-person classes as possible. We are also working on class schedules to convert a number of classes to a hybrid synchronous modality in which students have a mix of in-person and Zoom sessions per class.

Professors will continue to hold office hours. Their office locations will be communicated extensively. Some Office Hours may be converted to online (Zoom) interactions, but we are working to find as many spaces as possible for in-person interaction.

If your Department is currently at Carman, it will be moved to another campus building. The location will be communicated extensively so you can continue to visit during regular business hours.

Yes. We are identifying several spaces to accommodate students who may need to take Zoom classes while on campus. Those spaces will be clearly identified and accessible.

Yes. We have a Laptop Loaner program through the Basic Needs Center and IT. Additional resources will also be provided before the start of the Spring semester.

• Unit ventilators by the windows inside offices will be replaced, meaning that offices will not be accessible during construction.
• The contractor (through DASNY) will ensure that all needed equipment and college property will be relocated to the appropriate space.
• We recommend you vacate personal items you deem necessary. Plastic tarps or coverings will be provided to protect any items left behind. However, we cannot guarantee their safety. Boxes will be provided, but we are not able to take responsibility for moving personal items due to liability issues.
• New office space will either be equipped with shared computers or be set up with your current computer. You will be notified about your specific situation.
• You may want to consult with people who were recently relocated from Shuster Hall to learn about their experience.

Yes. We are identifying spaces where students can take their exams in-person.

There may be modifications to courses taught in other buildings to accommodate the relocation of classes previously taught in Carman. We are currently working on Spring 2027 scheduling and will provide more information as soon as possible.

Yes. The Center for Teaching and Learning has scheduled workshops, tutorials and other resources to assist any faculty member who might want training on effective hybrid synchronous teaching.
