Bronx Food Humanities
Join us for a conversation with Dr. Hanna Garth (Princeton University), followed by a public lecture on her new book, Food Justice Undone: Lessons for Building a Better Movement (University of California Press, 2026).
Drawing on twelve years of ethnographic research in South Central Los Angeles, Dr. Garth examines why many food justice initiatives have fallen short of their goals, and why we need to challenge familiar narratives about "food deserts" and healthy eating that shape food policy and activism.
The discussion will explore what its findings can teach us about food justice in the Bronx and other urban communities, where efforts to improve food access must also grapple with histories of inequality, local knowledge, and community leadership.
This free event will take place at the East Dining Room (Music Building) at Lehman College, CUNY. Please note entry is not guaranteed once venues reaches capacity.

About the Speaker
Hanna Garth is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. She is also the author of Food in Cuba: The Pursuit of a Decent Meal and coeditor of Black Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice.
