Dr. Levey received her Ph.D. in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She received an M.A. in Linguistics from Stanford University, with a minor in African Studies. Dr. Levey has been designated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) as a Board Recognized Specialist in Child Language. She has received research grants for study at Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria and has served as a consultant in Bratislava, Slovakia for a study of Slovakian children’s morpheme acquisition and as a guest lecturer for speech-language pathologists and linguists from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. She was appointed as the Conference Coordinator of the Seventeenth Annual Stanford Child Language Research Forum, sponsored by the Linguistics Program at Stanford. While at Lehman College, Dr Levey was a member of the President's Diversity Advisory Council at Lehman College. She also was appointed director of the Linguistics Program at Lehman College, with the goal to develop an academic program consistent with the standards of study in other colleges that prepared students for linguistic, TESOL, and other graduate programs.
Dr. Levey’s research and publications have focused on bilingualism and cultural differences and she has presented her research at national and international conferences. In 2011, Professor Levey co-edited and authored chapters in the book Language Development: Understanding Language Diversity in the Classroom (SAGE Publications). In 2014, she edited and authored chapters in the book Introduction to Language Development and the workbook Introduction to Language Development Workbook (Plural Publishing). She is currently at work on a second edition of the 2014 book published by Plural, due to be published in 2018. Dr. Levey has mentored eight students in the MARC and McNair Scholar programs and two graduate students in research projects. These research projects resulted in four joint publications and joint presentations at national conferences.
In 2009, she began research with audiologist Brian Fligor on the role of multicultural differences and the communication effects of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), educating portable music player users in safe listening. In 2014, they were invited to be consultants to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's (NYCDOHMH) Noise Project. Dr. Levey has been invited to present this research in two appearances on the NBC Today Show, along with recognition for this research in several other media sites.
