About the Center:
A unique and highly regarded graduate teaching facility, The Speech and Hearing Center at Lehman College provides state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic services to individuals in the NYC Metropolitan area and to members of the Lehman community who have speech, language, hearing, feeding, and swallowing deficits. Services are delivered by graduate-student clinicians under the close supervision of Clinical Educators, who are speech-language pathologists certified by ASHA (the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) and licensed by New York State.
The Speech and Hearing Center also serves as a laboratory for undergraduate and graduate students in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and faculty doing applied clinical research in the area of aphasia treatment, bilingualism, language and literacy, and early childhood intervention.
The Audiology Center provides Hearing Screenings and Auditory Processing Screenings.

Classroom to Clinic Initiatives:
Undergraduate students and those graduates taking our pre-requisites to be able to pursue a Master's Degree are invited every semester to engage in a variety of Classroom to Clinic Initiatives in the Speech and Hearing Center. These include: Play Partners in our Early Childhood Clinics, Conversational Partners in our Aphasia Clinic, Student Translators, IEP Supporters, Clinic Assistants, High School Ambassadors, Parkinson Clinic Development Team Members, Letters and Literacy: Story Time for Lil Ones.
For our volunteer, undergraduate students and pre-requisite students, our several Classroom to Clinic Initiatives (described here), yield the following:
Provide applications of the theoretical nature of treatment and evaluation in speech-language pathology in a positive environment that makes their academic learning relevant
- Yield a proximity to reality experience enabling relationship-building with faculty, staff and students, mentorship opportunities, and meaningful learning experiences
- Create opportunities for personalized attention and conversation between student and Clinical Faculty instructor, e.g., facilitates counselling on personal statements, résumé preparation, graduate school applications, and/or employment prospects.
- Answers the question for the student, do I have the right stuff? For the instructor, can I demonstrate to this student how he or she can develop this skill set?
- Enables students to develop advocacy skills for our field advocacy being a foundational skill necessary in the major, in Graduate School, and in life.
- Functions as the tangible reality part of the dream of working in the field of speech-language pathology.
- Provides HOPE and light in relationship where heretofore there may not have been.
