Parkinson's Clinic
The Lehman College Speech and Hearing Center has established a Parkinson's Clinic. This specialty clinic offers speech and swallowing therapy for patients with Parkinson's and Parkinson's-related diseases. With the assistance of a grant from the Parkinson Voice Project of Richardson, Texas, student clinicians and Clinical Educators have been trained in the SPEAK OUT!® therapy program to deliver effective therapy for our Bronx and surrounding community patients. All evaluations and therapy are offered free of charge. For more information, contact Leslie Grubler, Director of Clinical Education, at 718.960.6084 or Leslie.Grubler@lehman.cuny.edu.
New Study Abroad Program
Summer 2018 was the inaugural study-abroad experience for three of our graduate students. The Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences Department through Lehman College has an affiliation with the Universidade de Sao Paulo and the Hospital das Clinicas in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The program in Sao Paulo provided housing for the students and they were given the opportunity to see many interesting cases of facial palsy, cleft, head and neck cancer, dysphagia across the lifespan (bedside and clinic), and facial and dental abnormalities. The opportunity to collaborate and work with the speech and language pathology students at the university was invaluable.
Letters and Literacy: Story Time for Little Ones Program
Undergraduate and graduate student volunteers supported groups of children 0-5years of age in Story Time activities during six weeks this summer at the Speech and Hearing Center. During the program, designed to foster emergent literacy skills, student clinicians assessed children’s familiarity with reading and books, counseled parents, and used best practices in emergent literacy to engage children and their parents in story time activities. The program offers a model for caregivers and parents in the Bronx community to foster a love of reading in their children.
