AI and Academic Integrity Comes into Focus

Corey Ptak presents to a group of students and faculty.

Faculty and students gathered on Oct. 6 to discuss artificial intelligence and academic integrity at a forum exploring how generative AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT are being used at Lehman.

Sponsored by the Division of Campus Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the forum was part of the College’s AI² Initiative, a semesterlong series of events aimed at developing shared expectations for AI use.

“The use of generative AI in higher education has been creating a trust gap on college campuses,” said CTL Director Corey Ptak. “Faculty perceptions of student AI misuse may be fueling suspicion, uncertainty, and a more defensive classroom environment. Meanwhile, students lack clear guidance about appropriate use of AI in their classes—and are scared they’ll be accused of using it in the wrong way.”

“These accusations can carry significant consequences for a student regardless of whether or not they are true,” he added.

The concerns prompted CTL to collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs on the initiative, which seeks to encourage dialogue about AI and academic integrity.

“The goal is to clarify expectations around the use of AI for both faculty and students, and give both groups an opportunity to express their thoughts and concerns," Ptak said.

At the forum, participants considered scenarios drawn from students’ own accounts of AI use, weighing whether academic integrity had been violated and how learning might have been affected.

"We used polling software to visualize the difference between the student and faculty perspective, and it showed that faculty and students remain far apart on their views of AI use in teaching and learning,” Ptak said. “It’s clear that we need to continue the conversation.”
