Biography
Teresita A. Levy serves as Associate Provost for Experiential Learning and Executive Director for Industry Partnerships at Lehman College. A trained historian and scholar, she teaches courses on the history of Latin America, the Caribbean, and their diasporas. Her research centers on the economic history of the Spanish Caribbean, with particular attention to the tobacco industry and its entanglements with empire.
Professor Levy is the author of Puerto Ricans in the Empire: Tobacco Growers and U.S. Colonialism, published by Rutgers University Press in 2014. In this award-winning study, she argues that Puerto Ricans actively demanded and secured inclusion within the U.S. empire, shaping the terms of that inclusion alongside—rather than solely in response to—colonial power.
As Associate Provost, Professor Levy leads CUNY Beyond, a university-wide initiative that integrates career development across the academic experience. She provides strategic vision and implementation for experiential learning opportunities, both locally and globally, ensuring that students connect their studies to meaningful professional pathways.
Professor Levy holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in History from CUNY Graduate Center and an M.S. in Counseling from Long Island University C.W. Post Campus.
