Thank you for your interest in our graduate programs in Mathematics Education at Lehman College. Most likely you are interested in attaining New York State certification to teach mathematics at the middle school level (grades 5-9) or at the secondary school level (grades 7-12). Lehman offers Master’s programs at both levels, each of which leads to both initial and professional certification in mathematics.

Please email both program coordinators, Professor Rabab Abi-Hanna and Professor Celia Cruz to review requirements for the 5-9 or the 7-12 programs. If you have completed an undergraduate major in mathematics, you may be eligible to enter an accelerated 7-12 program, which allows for increased flexibility in choosing some of your own coursework. If, in addition, you hold a Master’s degree in pure mathematics, we have an Advanced Certificate Program that greatly shortens the path towards certification. See About for complete descriptions of all our programs.

Lehman College takes pride in offering prospective and in-service teachers of mathematics an experiential, problem-solving approach to instruction, along with traditional time-honored methods that have proved to be successful over the years. We give our students a broad background  in mathematics content and in professional education, in order to prepare for the appropriate state certification examinations. And we are proud that graduates of our programs are exceptionally well received by middle and high schools in the New York metropolitan area.
