Biography
Gillian U. Bayne is a tenured Associate Professor of Science Education who holds a dual appointment in the Urban Education Department at CUNY’s Graduate Center. She has over thirty years of science education experience, which has helped to deepen not only her passion for the science content, but equally important, the ethical underpinnings of its pedagogical enactment. She has worked with and supported beginning and pre-service teachers, as well as science education doctoral students.
Dr. Bayne’s research is grounded in sociocultural theory, and encompasses addressing STEM equity issues within communities that have been marginalized by systemic oppression locally, nationally and internationally. Some additional foci include examining the personal and professional trajectories of underrepresented scientists of color, the leadership development of professional Ethiopian Women in STEM, science educational outreach at Genspace, a Brooklyn based community lab, and the National Society of Black Physicists x Harlem Gallery of Science Mentoring Program.
Dr. Bayne has served as Principal Investigator on a NASA grant that has supported the professional development of Lehman College's pre-service and inservice science and mathematics teachers, and as both coauthor and Co-Principal Investigator on two $1.2M National Science Foundation Noyce grants. In 2020, she was selected for the Inaugural HistoryMakers Academic Research Fellowship Award, which supported research utilizing Lehman College's HistoryMakers Digital Archive. Dr. Bayne has published in highly respected scholarly venues, including Learning Environments Research, Cultural Studies of Science Education, the Journal of Multicultural Education, and the International Handbook of Research on Multicultural Science Education
