Deigo Zamato Ovalle: Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Class of 2025

Diego hails from Cusco, Peru, where he grew up speaking the indigenous language Quechua as well as Spanish. At the age of 15, he immigrated to the United States hoping for a better future and, fueled by a desire to serve disadvantaged people, decided to pursue medicine. Working as a welder for his father’s company, he simultaneously enrolled at Lehman, where he served as a tutor in the Science Learning Center. Diego graduated summa cum laude in Spring 2020 with honors in biological sciences. Accepted into multiple M.D. programs across the United States, he chose Albert Einstein College of Medicine because the school’s dedication to community outreach aligned with his mission. As a first-year medical student, Diego has received the Wayne Anthony Butts Scholarship and the Einstein Service and Research Scholarship.
