Why Now?
“I lost my job and was denied food stamps.”
” Right now, things have been extremely hard with the shutdown. I find myself struggling to decide whether to pay bills or eat and right now. I have little money for food.”
“My husband is unemployed, and we do not have any money to pay our debts. I need help please I have two little kids.”
“My father recently fell really sick with renal failure and requires a special diet. My mother and I lost our jobs recently, so it's been hard to cover groceries for everyone.”
These are just a few of the comments our students have shared with members of the Division of Student Affairs staff.
The Campaign for Lehman College was conceived more than four months ag o during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic to rally the College's internal and extended community behind the common goal of raising $1 million in emergency support for our already under-resourced students.
Our community answered the call: collectively, we have raised more than $1,000,000 in cash and multi-year pledges to date, which will help us support those experiencing food and housing insecurities, emergencies, assist with scholarships, and help with general operations. This effort has helped thousands of students meet their most basic needs so that they could continue their education at Lehman.
While we have been able to meet some of the needs of our students based on funding available this fiscal year, we need your help to assist the more than 500 students who currently have an unmet need – a number that undoubtedly will grow in the coming months. In order to meet these and the anticipated needs of our students in the fall, we are increasing the Campaign’s goal to at least $1.5 million to help to get our students through the end of the calendar year.
