Radiation Safety at Lehman College
Radioactive materials present unique potential hazards, storage and disposal procedures, and regulatory requirements at every stage of their useful “life”. One of the requirements is that the institution housing the radioactive materials establish a radiation safety program, which consists of the following elements:
- Radioactive materials license (issued by NYC DOHMH)
- Radioactive materials management plan
- Radiation exposure monitoring
- Inventory control
- Radioactive waste management
- Radiation safety training (initial and refresher training)
The use of radiolabeled molecules, once ubiquitous in many areas of scientific research, has been in steep decline over the past two decades in favor of nonradioactive materials and techniques. However, for certain procedures, only radioactive materials will suffice.
Please read the Lehman College Radioactive Materials Management Plan for information on ordering radioisotopes, safe handling of radioactive materials, radiation dosimetry and monitoring, and management of radioactive waste.
