Welcome to The Urban Male Leadership Program: Building Great Leaders One Student at a Time
Michael A. Deas, L.M.S.W. Director, Urban Male Leadership Program
I am delighted to lead the Urban Male Leadership Program at Lehman College in strategic efforts to increase the number of Black and Latino males in higher education. And while I have seen progress, I am fully aware that it has not been enough. Barriers continue to rise making further progress for Black and Latino males even more difficult to attain. One of our noted advocates for education in the urban community, Malcolm X, stated, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Read More

The Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP) is designed to facilitate the successful transition of first year and transfer students to Lehman College. The UMLP is focused upon the recruitment, retention, academic success and graduation of students, especially underrepresented Black and Latino males in higher education. The UMLP fulfills its mission to support high achievement through monthly academic intervention and success workshops and leadership development trainings. Furthermore, each interested UMLP student, is presented with an opportunity to participate within Circle of Support Mentorship sessions. UMLP Students are paired with another student, staff member, faculty member or senior administrator, in order to further assist in their academic and social development at Lehman College.
The Urban Male Leadership Program at Lehman College, established in 2006, is celebrating its tenth year anniversary. In acknowledgement of this milestone, the UMLP has adopted the commemorative theme, “The UMLP: “10 Years & Beyond … Developing the Next Generation of Leaders.” This theme will serve as our program mantra during the 2016-2017 academic year, as we prepare for our first UMLP Scholarship & Awards Brunch on Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 11 a.m. - 2p.m., at the Eastwood Manor, 3371 Eastchester Road, Bronx, NY. Through the support of the Lehman College community and beyond, you can assist the UMLP in increasing academic and needs based scholarship opportunities, and assistance with graduate and professional school testing preparation for academically prepared UMLP students and program alumni. The development of thoughtful and prepared leaders begins with critical investments in their future today. You have an opportunity to join the UMLP in highlighting true success stories. Our students are prepared to address today’s challenges with confidence, because they have received the requisite training, and most importantly support from the UMLP and Lehman College. Therefore, the UMLP is requesting your partnership in achieving the best academic and social outcomes for these Lehman College students.
We hope you will financially support this worthwhile effort. Please contribute and select the “QGiv” option by clicking the DONATE NOW button on the Lehman College website.
