Inspired by Throgs Neck's location on the Long Island Sound, Justen Ladda composed his work around a maritime theme. Like his earlier award-winning work at P.S. 7 in the Bronx, he created an integrated design that includes hallways, staircases, and cafeteria walls and incorporate ceramic tile mosaics. There are three mosaic murals in the cafeteria: an underwater scene of a coral reef, one of a seascape, and yet another of a surfer on a huge wave, as well as a mosaic image of Niagara Falls above a drinking fountain in the hallway. The hallway and stairs are adorned with ornamental Greek key frets in mosaic.
