GED Testing

GET YOUR HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATION BY PASSING THE GED EXAM

PLEASE NOTE: We are no longer administering the paper-based test, only computer-based.

What is the GED Test?

New York State selected the General Educational Development Test (GED® Test) as the primary pathway to a New York State High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma.

The GED Test includes four sections:

  • Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA*)
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Science
  • Social Studies

*The RLA includes reading and writing subject tests. If only the reading or the writing was previously passed, by taking the GED (2002-2013) or the TASC Test (2013-2022), the RLA must be taken in full.

For additional information regarding the format of the GED, please visit the GED homepage.

Preparing for the GED® Test

The GED® Test takes approximately 7.5 hours to complete, inclusive of all four subject tests. It is strongly advised that first time GED test takers complete all four subject tests. If one or more of the subtests are not passed, those sections may be retaken after 60 days, however, subtests cannot be taken more than three times in a calendar year.

Statistics indicate that individuals who have participated in test preparation programs are more likely to pass an HSE exam. Adult education preparation programs are listed within the GED Registration and Scheduling system, and can be found at the GED homepage

Lehman Prep Course for the GED® Test

GED preparation courses will be given through Lehman's Adult Learning Center. For over 30 years, the Lehman College Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been one of the leading adult literacy programs in New York City. We offer free classes for anyone wanting to improve reading, writing, and/or math skills as well as classes specifically to prepare for the high school equivalency (HSE) exam.

To be added to the ALC’s list for upcoming classes, please complete the registration form: Spring 2023 Registration Form

GED SCORES

Upon completing each subject test, a test taker's unofficial scores will be available for viewing in their GED account. GED scores are transferred electronically every day to the NYS Education Department. The NYSED HSE Office processes and mails the HSE diplomas, which takes about 8-10 weeks after a test taker has successfully completed and passed all subject tests
