Kayla Neverson, Certified Phlebotomist
At age 19, Kayla Neverson is pursuing her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Lehman College has helped her prepare for her future career with a variety of medical industry classes and certificates, including in Phlebotomy. “I wanted to do Phlebotomy, so I applied to Lehman. I took CPR, First Aid, and Phlebotomy. Right when I finished, I got a job as a phlebotomist at a lab.” Kayla credits her Lehman College Phlebotomy instructor, Sheldon Stallings, with her success on the practical portion of the exam. “He had me study a lot, which made it so I could feel more prepared. I feel like the tests were easy because we were working all the time on our skills. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what grade I would get—but I got a 95%.” She was inspired by her aunt, who works as a phlebotomist. When Kayla was younger, she would go with her aunt to work where she watched her draw blood for dozens of patients. That’s when she knew that she wanted to enter the medical field. “My phlebotomy certificate helped me get my foot in the door. I’m very motivated, very goal-driven. I’ve always been the type of person who likes to help people. I love kids, and I used to want to be a pediatrician. Now I’m going back to college to become a registered nurse.”
