The Macintosh Desktop Publishing Certificate Program and the Macintosh Graphic Design Certificate Program are for those who are just entering the field as well as for experienced page layout and graphic design professionals who need to learn new technologies. Students may select individual courses or complete a certificate program. Enrollment is limited to one student per computer. Registration begins in August, 2001. Call (718) 960-8512 to register or to request a printed copy of the fall 2001 catalog.

Change in Macintosh Course Offerings

Please note that with the exception of Macintosh Basics (MAC 10), Macintosh courses will be offered only once a year. The tentative schedule, subject to change, follows. Please keep this schedule in mind when planning your program especially if you are planning to obtain a certificate.
MAC 01 Fundamentals of Graphic Design and Typography for Desktop Publishing will be offered in the fall semester.

MAC 10 Macintosh Basics will be offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters.

MAC 50 Creating Multimedia Applications with Macromedia Director will be offered in the spring.

MAC 51 Design Essentials for the World Wide Web Using HTML will be offered in the summer.

MAC 65 Basic Desktop Publishing on the Macintosh-QuarkXPress 4.1 will be offered in the fall.

MAC 67 Illustration on the Macintosh-Adobe Illustrator 8 will be offered in the spring.

MAC 70 Macintosh Word Processing-Microsoft Word 6 will be offered in the fall.

MAC 88 Creative Imaging on the Macintosh-Adobe Photoshop will be offered in the fall. This 25 hour course replaces MAC 87 Creative Imaging on the Macintosh-Adobe Photoshop and MAC 91 Advanced Imaging on the Macintosh-Adobe Photoshop. MAC 87 and MAC 91 will no longer be offered.


Macintosh Class Schedule for fall 2001


Macintosh Basics (Pre-semester course)
MAC 10/$145
A ten-hour course covering the fundamentals of the Macintosh operating system, including management of the desktop; creation, management and saving of folders and files; items on the Apple menu such as the Chooser and Control Panel; input and output. This course, or equivalent course or experience, is a prerequisite for other courses in the Macintosh programs. 1.2 CEU

Saturdays, September 8 and September 15, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.(includes 1/2 hour lunch break), 2 sessions.



Fundamentals of Graphic Design and Typography for Desktop Publishing
MAC 0l/$195
A good working knowledge of graphic design is a necessary prerequisite to making the best use of a powerful desktop publishing program. This studio (non-computer) course is for those who have little or no background in two-dimensional design. Students prepare for the world of computer graphics by learning the elements of composition and organization of type and image. 2.5 CEU

Basic Desktop Publishing on the Macintosh
with QuarkXPress 4.1

MAC 65/$275
QuarkXPress is the industry standard for electronic page makeup. The course focuses on ways to manipulate basic type, headlines, rules and borders. Students learn how to create advertisements, newsletters, letterheads, and improve the look of in-house office documents. (Prerequisite: MAC 10 Macintosh Basics or equivalent course or experience.) 2.5 CEU

Macintosh Word Processing - Microsoft Word 6
MAC 70/$275
Microsoft Word is the leading word processing application for the Macintosh. Students begin with simple text entry and explore the following: cut and paste, font and text manipulation; spell and grammar checking; word sorting; mailmerge; and chart and graph preparation. (Prerequisite: MAC 10 Macintosh Basics or equivalent course or experience.) 2.5 CEU

Creative Imaging on the Macintosh
- Adobe Photoshop 5
Updated course

MAC 88/$345
This beginning course in Photoshop, one of the most powerful visual communication tools, takes the student through the fundamentals of image editing. Students will learn how to make photos, the "raw material" for creative expression; to input, scan and output images; and choose the best method to make and apply selections, masks, layers and channels. Additional topics such as proofing and printing, file formats, image resolutions, enhancing photos and the use of filters are covered. (Prerequisite: MAC 10 Macintosh Basics or equivalent course or experience.) 2.5 CEU

Creating Multimedia Applications
with Macromedia Director

MAC 50/$345

Principles and techniques of multimedia design on the Macintosh are introduced. Macromedia Director is used as the basic authoring tool. Students learn how to use Director to bring together sound, animation, photographs, drawings and text to produce effective and entertaining multimedia presentations. Content includes material created in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, SoundEdit and other Macintosh programs. (Prerequisite: MAC 87 Creative Imaging on the Macintosh - Adobe Photoshop 5 or MAC 67 Illustration on the Macintosh - Adobe Illustrator 8 or equivalent course and experience. 3 CEU

Illustration on the Macintosh
- Adobe Illustrator 8

MAC 67/$275
Adobe Illustrator is one of most widely used professional PostScript drawing programs available for artists and illustrators working on the Macintosh. Students learn how to use Illustrator's broad range of tools to create magazine illustrations, charts and maps, technical drawings, logos, letterheads, and graphic items. (Prerequisite: MAC 10 Macintosh Basics or equivalent course or experience.) 2.5 CEU

Design Essentials for the World Wide Web using HTML
MAC 51/$345
Students begin by learning the basics of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the language used for creating documents for publication on the Internet''s World Wide Web. Advanced features of HTML such as image maps, tables and forms are introduced. Students then learn to incorporate materials created with graphic and sound tools such as Macromedia Director, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and SoundEdit into HTML documents. (Prerequisite: MAC 10 or equivalent course or experience.) 3 CEU
