Spring 2024 MATH 71000 Differential Geometry
This is the second half of the Differential Geometry first-year graduate course, which is mainly an introduction to Riemannian geometry. Students that did not take the first half of the course but have a working knowledge of smooth manifolds and are excited about blending ideas from geometry, topology, and analysis are welcome to join.
We will discuss basic results on the local and global structure of Riemannian manifolds, covering topics that include geodesics, curvature, Jacobi fields, submanifold geometry, geometric variational problems, and principles of geometric analysis. Towards the end of the semester, we will connect these foundational results to current research problems and indicate possible directions for future investigation.
