About Active Learning at Lehman College
The Active Learning Institute @Lehman College is a two-day seminar for Lehman College and Bronx Community College faculty that will provide in-depth discussion and methods for faculty interested in increasing active learning, such as by "flipping" their classrooms. It is funded through the $5.7 million, 5-year Pathways to Student Success in STEM (PTS3) grant Lehman College received from the Department of Education in November 2016.
PTS3 is a coherent and collaborative program that is engage senior and community college students in the Bronx in activities designed to build their cultural capital through: intensive advisement; mastery of academic content and skills; and participation in STEM activities that are central to STEM interest, efficacy, and success. PTS3 will also address administrative barriers that plague transfer students through joint planning and collaborative implementation. The ultimate goal of PTS3 is to increase the number of Hispanic and low-Income students who graduate with STEM degrees; develop and enhance articulation between 2 and 4 year institutions; and support student-centered program services and activities that lead to improved student outcomes in STEM.
Participants in the Active Learning Institute will explore the purposes and outcomes of active learning and apply research-based practices to the process of developing active, student-centered course units - particularly in STEM-related fields. Through a combination of classroom visits, workshops, presentations, and discussion, participants will work through the essential components of designing engaging student experiences through active learning techniques. Topics covered will include facilitating individual and collaborative learning activities, planning and creating effective online materials, and fostering and maintaining an inclusive course climate.
