writer and artist, holds a position as an artist-in-residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation. During the 1960s, Ukeles completed undergraduate degrees in international studies and history from Barnard College and studied visual arts at the Pratt Institute in New York. Her works often reflect her concern for environmental issues and methods of resource management. Some of her public works based in New York include Touch Sanitation (1978-1984); Flow City (1983-current); and Fresh Kills Landfill and Sanitation Garage (1989-present). Ukeles is a Guggenheim Fellow and a recipient of several grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.
