Karl H. Gruppe
was born in Rochester, New York in 1893. At 12, Gruppe's father entered him in the Royal Academy at Antwerp, Holland where he studied sculpture for four years under Belgian sculptor Frans Joris. Gruppe was chief sculptor for the New York Department of Parks from 1934-1937. His work can be seen at City College (CUNY) and at the Numismatic Society.
