Lehman College to Celebrate Class of 2020 with Virtual Recognition Ceremonies
Lehman College will celebrate its graduating Class of 2020 with a special virtual recognition ceremony that will be livestreamed at 11 a.m. EST on Thursday, May 28, via Facebook Live on the College’s Facebook channel @LehmanCUNY, on lehman.edu and on BronxNet, channel 67 on Optimum, 33 on FiOS and BronxNet.tv.
The event will feature remarks by President Daniel Lemons, Provost Peter Nwosu, deans of the College’s five Schools, graduating seniors from the Class of 2020 Student Government Association President Tarialy Hernandez and Class of 2020 graduate, Kassandra Montes. The Class of 2020 will also hear congratulatory messages from CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos, U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, and Lehman alumni New York State Attorney General Letitia James, and Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. Honorary Degree recipients Dr. Oxiris Barbot, New York City Health Commissioner, and Latin jazz legend Bobby Sanabria, will also provide remarks, with Bobby Sanabria & the Multiverse Big Band performing.
The names of the more than 3,600 graduates of the Lehman College Class of 2020 will be displayed, along with additional congratulatory messages from faculty and staff.
While the ceremony is taking place on the day originally scheduled for commencement, Lehman College is committed to inviting the Class of 2020 back for in-person graduation on a future date, said President Daniel Lemons.
“Commencement at Lehman College marks the culmination of our graduates’ hard work, especially this year, and it is always a jubilant day for their families, friends, instructors and advisors as well – many of whom travel from far and wide for the occasion,” Lemons said. “I recognize the loss graduates feel at not having our in-person celebration at this time due to the pandemic, but I hope everyone who would have joined us in person will join the celebration online on May 28.”
Honors Celebration
A special virtual celebration for honors students, recognizing the accomplishments of the Class of 2020’s highest achievers—those students who are graduating with GPAs between 3.5-4.0--will take place at 3 p.m. EST, on May 26. The event will also be livestreamed on Facebook, the College’s website and on BronxNet, channel 68 Optimum, 34 FiOS and BronxNet.tv. That ceremony will feature remarks by President Daniel Lemons, Provost Nwosu, Teacher of the Year Laura Roberts, associate professor and clinical director of Counselor Education/School Counseling; Office of Prestigious Awards Director Michelle Augustine and two honors students: Ayesha Lam and Wayne Townsend. The ceremony, open to all, will also feature and recognize the accomplishments of each and every graduating honor student in the Class of 2020 at Lehman College.
Individual schools and programs may host their own virtual celebrations for their graduates.
Graduates are encouraged to post to social media posts leading up to and during the ceremony, using hashtags #lehmancollege2020, #lehmanstrong and in the case of honors students, #lehmanhonors2020. For grads who have ordered and plan to still receive caps and gowns, they are encouraged to share pictures and videos of your celebration at home using the aforementioned hashtags.
