Members of the Lehman College and CUNY community gathered on Tuesday, January 7 to bid farewell to Deputy Director of Public Safety Gregory Nigri, one of CUNY’s longest serving officers, who spent 32 ensuring that Lehman remains a safe and welcoming place to learn, work, and visit.

Nigri was honored with a traditional “walk-off” ceremony in the lobby of the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts; a line-up of current and past officers from across CUNY, as well as a bagpipe serenade and the presentation of two plaques thanking Nigri for his decades of service.

Fausto Ramirez, director of Public Safety, reflected on his tenure.

“I have worked with Greg for more than half my career,” said Ramirez. “He is a true work partner and a friend. When I became Director, he was already an experienced and valued manager, overseeing the day-to-day operations and responsibilities of our unit.”

Nigri helped steer the campus through rough waters, including September 11, 2001; the transformation of the APEX to an evacuation center and shelter during and after Hurricanes Irene and Sandy; and the COVID-19 pandemic.“Greg is one of my confidants and never shrinks from telling me what he thinks is best for our department and Lehman,” Ramirez added.

Said Nigri, “it is going to be a big transition for me—I’ve spent half my life at Lehman College. I’ve seen many people come and go over the years and had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and develop some strong bonds. I will miss my Public Safety and Lehman family.”

Separately, Ramirez lauded Assistant Director/Lieutenant Ezequiel Pagan, another veteran of over 30 years. “Ezequiel was an integral part of the management team and my top investigator. He was always up for the challenge, and never was shy in asking the tough questions. His contributions are evident in so many parts of our operations.”
