Five in a Canoe
Charles N. Miller Collection
1910
Five children enjoy a canoe ride in the backyard of a house at 2235 Creston Avenue near 182 Street. Meanwhile, a boy in the water looks on while his friend (Bronx Democratic leader Charles Buckley) watches from shore with his dog nearby.
"We were surrounded by farms and woodland, and we had a natural instinct in animals.
We liked to make bows and arrows and play Indian. We liked to climb trees.
We liked to build rafts and go onto creeks - go swimming, sort of a Huckleberry Finn life. And our younger years was spent outdoors."
