The following directories are on the CD:

Not all of the directories are used.

The following software products should be installed for a functioning system (tested only on XP):

MikTex TeX system with many, many packages including revtex4
WinEdt editor customized for using TeX
Ghostscript used for conversion of files including postscript and pdf
GhostView for display and printing of postscript, pdf and other filetypes
Adobe Acrobat Reader used to display pdf files (but GhostView can do this too)

MikTeX installation

run the MikTeX setup program from the CD.

cddriveletter:\MikTeXSetupWizard\setup.exe

The installation will look familiar to anyone who has installed a program under Windows. Here are some of the important selections:

Select

Install from a local package repository

whon prompted to select the type of installation.

Select the "package set" you want. This determines the number of different macro packages that are installed. "All Packages" will occupy 500 MB after installation and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

Browse to select the local package repository. Use the drive letter of your CD drive:

cddriveletter:\downloads\MikTex2.2

It is best to leave the default selections for file folder and local texmf tree.

Install the editor

WinEdt is a shareware editor customized for use with LaTex but also very useful as a plain text editor of very large files. It is distributed as a self-extracting archive wined5.exe.

The location of the archive on the CD is:

\winedt\winedt5.exe

Upon clicking on winedt5.exe, you will be prompted to unzip the files to a specified location. The suggested location will probably be the CD, which, of course, will not work. Change the path and directory name to a location on your hardrive.

After extracting the file, run

setup.exe

in the directory where the unzipped files are located.

This is also a standard Windows installation. Suggest that you select the custom installation since this installs everything in about 10 MBs.

Install Ghostscript

run the ghostscript installation program

cddriveletter:\gs\AFPL\gs800w32.exe

By default it will install into c:\gs

Installation will take from 10-20 MB.

Install GhostView

Install the viewer by running:

cddriveletter:\gs\viewer\gsv43232.exe

It will install by default to c:\ghostgum and will occupy about 5MB.

Install Adobe Acrobat Reader if necessary

You can get this from www.adobe.com

Some tests:

Ghostview

Run GhostView and open a ps, eps and pdf file (examples of these may be found in the various installation directories). Note that the default installation does not associate .pdf files with GhostView. Therefore, Ghostview will not automatically open when you click on a .pdf file.

TeX

Run Winedt. To open a sample tex file:

Project > Current Work > APS-LaTex Paper

Select the LaTex icon to process the document.

Select DVI Preview (uses a viewer called YAP) to see the results

Select DVI2PS to convert to ps. (these files can be viewed in ghostview)

Select DVI2PDF to convert to PDF. (these files can be viewed in acrobat reader and ghostview.)
