The Chi Eta Phi Sorority is an international, nonprofit, professional organization dedicated to registered professional nurses and student nurses that come from various cultures and ethnic backgrounds. As their mission statement affirms, they aspire “to elevate the plane of nursing, and increase interest in the nursing profession.” The Chi Eta Phi sorority was founded on October 16th, 1932 by Aliene C. Ewell, RN with the support of eleven other registered nurses to fight for their concerns of segregation and limitations of advancement for black nurses in segregated hospitals and facilities. In addition to their fight for racial equality in nursing, their vision was to influence communities through healthcare education and services. Today, with over 8,000 collegiate members, this nonprofit organization manages programs for health promotion, disease prevention, leadership development, mentoring, recruitment, and scholarship. The Chi Eta Phi sorority upholds a turtle as their mascot because of its persevering, sure-footed, purposefully directed, determined, risk-taker qualities. They express that to implement change, one must be willing to move out of their protective shell and have the courage and the confidence to encourage and support creativity and innovation. It is through their love and commitment that they strive to become a health beacon of innovation for the world.
We are thrilled to have the Omicron Epsilon Beta Chapter of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority representing nursing students in the School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing at Lehman College!
