This semester, a distinguished HS2N Social Work faculty member is featured to highlight his career achievements and remarkable impact on our faculty, students, and community:
Dr. Carl Mazza, Professor and Chair, Department of Social Work
Dr. Carl Mazza, DSW, LMSW is a Professor of Social Work and currently serves as the Chair of the Department. He has served as the Chair of Social Work since 2014. In fall of 2022, Dr. Mazza will officially begin his retirement from Lehman College and we would like to honor his remarkable contributions to our community. Dr. Mazza’s professional peers are honoring him with the lifetime achievement award at the annual conference of the New York State Social Work Education Association in November 2021. In 2019, Dr. Mazza also received the Diamond Award from the New York City Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, their lifetime leadership award and highest honor.
Dean Elgloria Harrison honors Dr. Mazza’s contributions and impact in HS2N and Lehman College: “Professor Carl Mazza truly exemplifies what it means to be a compassionate human being. He has been a dedicated stateman to his professional identity as a Social Worker. His longstanding membership as faculty of Lehman College and his role as the Chair of the Social Work Department is emblematic of the person who has given a lot to his community within and external to Lehman College. This past year, I have been honored to work with Dr. Mazza and despite the challenges we all have faced weathering the pandemic storm, he has brought a sense of calmness to his department that reassures things will be okay. While the job of department chair is not easy, it is refreshing to see the compassion of such a kind human being, one who has dedicated his professional career to helping students, faculty, and our entire community.”
Dr. Mazza is also Past President of the New York State Social Work Education Association and Former Chairperson of the Criminal & Juvenile Justice Track for the National Council on Social Work Education. He has been recognized by the Urban Male Leadership Program of CUNY and the African and African-American Studies Department of Lehman College for his years of service and dedication to mentoring students; awarded Outstanding Service to Lehman College; and “Outstanding Peer Reviewer” from the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Mazza has been named “Person of the Year” by the College Initiative Program, a support program for people transitioning from prison into college and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Hudson Link, a nonprofit agency providing college education to people incarcerated in prison. At Lehman College, Dr. mazza was named Teacher of the Year in 2005.
