The STAR Mentoring and Coaching Program employs STAR Coaches to provide peer academic support for selected sections of historically challenging courses in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology. STAR stands for Students Transforming Academic Realities.
Based on course schedule and instructor permission, each semester we recruit STAR Coach candidates to work with faculty and students in specific courses
STAR Coaches are students and recent graduates who demonstrate academic success, excellent communication skills, and leadership in their studies and professional lives. As near-peers, STAR Coaches participate in a non-credit course in facilitation, project management, and teaching and learning skills. STAR Coaches facilitate weekly content-focused group review sessions for students outside of regularly scheduled class times and communicate regularly with their assigned instructors about course goals, strategies, and content.
STAR Coaches earn up to $16 per hour for 10-12 hours per week (up to 150 hours) for the following activities:
- Class attendance & notetaking
- Weekly contact
- Weekly review session preparation
- Pre-term, mid-term, and ongoing training participation
- 1.5-3 hours of weekly review session facilitation
- Ongoing coaching and mentoring program support
- Active participation in and completion of a hybrid eportfolio course that includes the above activities
Twelve hours of participation in intensive training in STAR strategies and peer facilitation is required in addition to participation in ongoing training and weekly mentoring meetings throughout the term.
Candidates must maintain a minimum 3.3 GPA overall, with a minimum of 3.5 in the discipline corresponding to the STAR Coach Course assignment. At least one faculty recommendation is required, from Lehman or a previous institution in addition to one professional recommendation (this may also be a faculty recommendation). Candidates must be in good standing with the College.
