New Faculty Resources
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the faculty of Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY). Lehman College is CUNY's only public senior college in the Bronx, with a faculty of more than 400 full-time and approximately 600 adjuncts serving more than 9,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students.
Lehman is a college on the move and an exciting place for teaching and scholarly activity. Over the last three years, enrollments have been increasing by three percent a year, and support for research and scholarship has increased by over five percent a year. While teaching clearly is our primary mission, the College is justifiably proud of the research, scholarly, and creative works of the faculty, seven of whom have been designated CUNY Distinguished Professors. Nearly twenty percent of Lehman faculty members also hold appointments at the CUNY Graduate Center, where the University's Ph.D. and other doctoral programs are organized.
You will find Lehman's students eager to learn and diverse not only in ethnicity but also in their life experiences. Most are the first in their families to attend college; 69.5% of the undergraduates are female, and 84.3% are members of minority groups (Lehman is a Federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution); 62% attend full time, and most also hold jobs. Lehman College granted 1,458 bachelor's and 653 master's degrees, as well as seventeen certificates, in May 2009. To be sure that all of these students experience some component of Lehman's General Education curriculum, this curriculum has been extended to upper-division students who are required to take at least one writing-intensive course and two interdisciplinary courses, LEH 300: The Humanities and the Sciences and LEH 301: The American Experience. Both of these topics can be approached from many disciplines, and I encourage you to consider teaching one of these courses, which are described in more detail on the General Education website.
