Women currently hold only 24 percent of the U.S. jobs in the STEM fields. Lehman's Women in Science program aims to increase the number of women in those positions by establishing a positive science experience and building a peer network for young women interested in pursuing STEM disciplines in college. Over the summer, promising female high school seniors from the Bronx earn college credit through a biological sciences course, work one-on-one with Lehman faculty in our research labs, visit local businesses, and attend seminars given by professional scientists. At the end of the summer, they present a capstone project to family members, faculty, and the local institutions and businesses they visited. Afterward, they remain together as a group "virtually," maintaining contact among themselves and with their faculty mentors.
