In March 2012, Lehman College joined UNITY, a coalition of minority journalists, to host an event with industry professionals at the Multimedia Center. During this event, Lehman College students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to network with these professionals. Guests were treated to guided tours of the MMC, food and cocktails, and individualized presentations.
Our studio and control rooms were opened, with students acting as presenters to describe and highlight our productions. In our post-production area, guests were treated to clips of the shows produced in the MMC, with students staffing each room to answer questions. Presentations included The Bronx Journal, Inside Lehman, EdCast, Conversations, and The Lehman College Jazz Festival. We also featured clips from Open 2.0, Open World, and Perspectives, programs produced in our studio by BronxNet Television.
All of these shows have students working in some capacity, (e.g. crew, directors, producers and hosts) which allows them to gain valuable real-world experience they can apply to their careers. Our music classroom featured our Scoring for Film class and projects produced by Michael Bacon’s students. Monitors located around the facility displayed photos taken by students in the Photojournalism class and work done for the Bronx Journal Website.
We were thrilled to be able to exhibit our facility to alumni and the many industry professionals that attended, but even more important was the opportunity to demonstrate the work of our students and enable them to interact with industry professionals.
The evening was a huge success, with students being offered the opportunity to join the association, and everyone being able to experience Lehman’s fantastic Multimedia Center and how it allows students to develop their skills as they embark on their careers.
