Circulation

Loan Periods
Loan periods are three weeks for undergraduate and graduate students. All books are due on the date that is stamped on a slip in the back of each book.

Borrowing Regulations
The Library stacks are open to all students and faculty. Books in the collection are listed by keyword, author, title, and subject in the CUNY+ electronic catalog.

Books may be borrowed at the Circulation Desk on the main floor. A Lehman College identification card validated for the current semester must be presented to borrow any Library materials. Because the Library uses an automated circulation system in which all transactions are registered against a bar-encoded label, all borrowers must be registered.

If the borrower's identification card or any book to be borrowed does not contain a bar-coded label (on the inside back cover), bring it to the Circulation Desk registration station (closest to the elevators).

Recalls
Books may be recalled after two weeks for all borrowers. When returned, all recalled books are held at the Circulation Desk for five (5) business days and a notice is sent to the requesting borrower. Books requested by the faculty for Reserve use will be recalled immediately.

Book Returns
Books should be returned directly to the Circulation Desk when the Library is open. When the Circulation Desk or the Library is closed the book return slot to the right of the main entrance outside the Library should be used. Remember that just leaving books on the Circulation Desk counter or re-shelving them will not clear your record. All returned books must be checked in by the Circulation Desk staff.

Renew Books
Books not needed by other borrowers and not overdue may be renewed for the original loan period. Circulation now accepts book renewals online. Renewals are not permitted by telephone or mail.
Online Renewals
You may renew your materials online through the MY ACCOUNT feature of CUNY+, CUNY's online catalog. Just click on the MY ACCOUNT link on this page, or click on the MY ACCOUNT tab once you have entered CUNY+.

  • You must have your Library barcode available.
  • First time users, your Barcode and your password is your 14 digit library barcode located on your ID card. Please note you may follow the instruction on the MY ACCOUNT screen about how to change your password.
  • After you are in MY ACCOUNT: 1. Click on Loans. 2. Click on the line # of the item you wish to renew. 3. Click on renew.
  • The changed due date will show on the screen. No further confirmation message is given.

Fines
All materials borrowed from the Library are the responsibility of the borrower. Fine schedules are established by the Board of Trustees to ensure compliance with circulation regulations and to keep materials available for the greatest number of users. Overdue books are fined 25 cents per day, per book. Books overdue 30 days will automatically be set at the maximum fine. Borrowing privileges are suspended to any student with outstanding fines or overdue books. Overdue and bill notices are sent to borrowers solely as a courtesy.

If the fines are not paid or delinquent books are not returned, registration will be blocked and transcript records will not be released. Also, Library borrowing privileges will be suspended at all CUNY campuses.

Lost Books
Books that are reported lost must be paid for at the current price, plus a processing fee.

Photocopy
Photocopy machines are located throughout the Library on all the floors. Four machines are on the main floor to the right of the main entrance, three machines are on the lower level (two in the hallway and one in the east alcove of periodicals), and there is one machine in each alcove behind the elevator bank on the second and third floor. Copies are 10 cents each and vend-a-cards may be used instead of coins.

There are two change machines in the Library and they give change of one dollar bills only in dimes. One is located on the lower level in Periodicals by the service counter and the other is located on the main floor near the Reference Desk.

Vend-A-Card dispenser is located opposite the circulation desk on the main floor. Follow the instructions on how to use the dispenser, which are posted above the machine. When you insert one dollar ($1) you first get a card with only seven copies at 8 cents a copy, but for every additional dollar you put on the card you get twelve copies per dollar. When you have used up the number of copies on the card you may reinsert your card into the vend-a-card dispenser and add money for more copy value to your card. The copy cards are usable on all the photocopy, microfilm, microfiche, and other machines in the Library.

Students with Disabilities
An Access and Technology Center is located in the Library on the second floor in Room 215. Programs available include Jaws 6.10, ZoomText 9.0, Dragon Naturally Speaking 8.1, Read and Write 4, SPSS for Windows 11.5, etc.  A Kurzweil Reader is also available.

Students with special needs should contact the Office of Student Disability Services to arrange for assistance in using the Library. The Office is located in Shuster Hall, Room 238.
