Lehman Professor Is Given the Keys to Miami

The Mayor of Miami recently awarded Dr. Gerardo Piña-Rosales (Languages and Literatures) the keys to the city. Dr. Piña-Rosales was in Florida to attend the Miami Book Fair International when Mayor Thomas Regalado presented him with this extraordinary honor.
This is just one of the recent accolades for Dr. Piña-Rosales, who has taught at Lehman College since 1981. This past year he was one of three recipients of Lehman's 2010 Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Work Award. As president of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language, he recently accepted the Don Quijote Award from King Juan Carlos I of Spain for his academy's contribution to the New Spanish Grammar. He is also honorary president of Sigma Delta Pi, the national collegiate Hispanic honor society.
Dr. Piña-Rosales's recent books include Spanish Writers in the United States, The Poetics of L. Alberto Ambroggi and Hablando bien se entiende la gente. His novel Desde esta cámara oscura (From This Darkroom) won the prestigious 2006 Ayuntamiento and Casino de Lorca Prize.
