Philosophy major Nayelis Lopez has won the 2010 Jerome Weinstock Essay competition for her essay, "Should We Fear Death?" The award, along with $300, was presented to her on April 9 at the annual initiation for Phi Sigma Tau, the International Honors Society of Philosophy.

The Bronx native was drawn to philosophy because it enabled her to gain a better understanding of life. "I entered the competition because I wanted to test my abilities, so winning was like a demonstration that I can do anything I desire to do," said Lopez, whose essay explored what happens when the soul is released from the body.

After graduating this spring, Lopez hopes to study philosophy on the graduate level and eventually become a college professor of philosophy. She would also like to work for a newspaper in the future.
