Lightning Women Win Indoor Track & Field Championships
The Lightning women's team took home the championship title at the 2006 CUNY Indoor Track and Field Championships. This is the team's first championship win for the Lightning since the 2003 season. Lehman edged City College by a score of 127-117.
Junior Amy Ruston, a two-time CUNY conference Most Valuable Runner, led the Lightning to three first place finishes in the event. Her time of 2.14.13 in the 800-meter run was a course record, while her performances in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter made CUNY records.
Martinia Heath was also a multiple medal winner, placing first in the High Jump and 55-meter hurdles and second in the Long Jump. Ruston and Heath accounted for 68 of the Lightning's total score. Also making significant contributions were Ana Ortiz and Olga Torres in the 1,500-, 800-, 3,000-meter run and Distance Medley Relay (DMR); Lianee Torres in the DMR, 1,500- and 800-meter run; and Alyyah Vizcarrando in the Long Jump, 55 High Hurdles and High Jump.
"This was a fantastic win for the program," says Lehman head coach Lesleigh Hogg. "We came into the event as an underdog, and our team really stepped up to the challenge."
This is the second CUNY championship for the lady Lightning this year, who also won the CUNY cross-country championship in October.
