A Message from Lehman College President José Luis Cruz
I write to share with you wonderful news: last week’s Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Leadership Awards Dinner was a huge success, raising more than $600,000 for student scholarships and support programs. We were most fortunate to have a very high-powered slate of honorees: Wendy Lehman Lash (granddaughter of our namesake); Phyllis (’71) and Ivan (’72) Seidenberg (former CEO of Verizon); Joanne Walsh Stavrou (’76) and Christopher Stavrou; and Kerry Washington. My thanks to all who supported the event, particularly our Lehman Scholars and members of our Urban Male Leadership Program, who were exemplary ambassadors for the College.

One of the most touching moments was when Kerry Washington accepted her award for Artistic Achievement. Kerry’s mother, Valerie, was a professor of Early Childhood Education here for many years, and she remains a member of our family in her capacity as chair of the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts.

In her speech, Kerry recounted her memories of visiting the campus, but she also praised our students, and lent her support to our work. Kerry, an internationally renowned actress, producer and activist, could have easily made a perfunctory acceptance speech, but instead she chose to deliver a powerful endorsement of our College and the value Lehman brings to lives of our students and our community. I urge you to watch it.
