Greetings from the President
Ricardo R. Fernández, President
Dear friends and members of the Lehman community:
Welcome to the 2014 Lehman College Foundation Leadership Awards Dinner, "A Celebration of Excellence." Although it is still early in the academic year, there is already cause for much celebration at Lehman College. We have established a School of Health Sciences, Human Services, and Nursing, and appointed a founding dean in September. By housing Lehman’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs in these fields— nursing, allied health care, speech-language-hearing sciences, and social work— the school will focus program resources and foster new research and courses of study.
Our innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) partnerships with Hostos and Bronx Community Colleges and local public schools—including the Bronx SciFest, the STEM Scholars program, and summer science classes for high school students—are creating more pathways to STEM careers for promising students in our community.
Lehman College recently received a $2.5 million pledge from a Mexican-born entrepreneur to support a unique research and service unit. This University-wide institute will boost enrollment of Mexican and Mexican-American students, provide scholarships, foster research on Mexico and Mexicans in the United States, and collaborate with community-based organizations to support and empower the Mexican immigrant community. Named for its benefactor, the Jaime Lucero Mexican Studies Institute is the only one of its kind on the East Coast.
In August, the New York State’s CUNY 2020 initiative awarded $4.6 million to support an exciting new partnership involving the Macaulay Honors College, Hostos Community College, and Lehman College. This inter-campus endeavor will establish a Media Jobs Incubator and Innovation Lab. These centers will lead to the creation of new businesses and a diverse employee candidate pool, ready to work in New York City media companies.
I am delighted to extend my warmest congratulations to our three honorees. Lehman is fortunate to have John Corigliano and Billy Collins on its faculty; their creativity, brilliance, and dedication to students exemplify the College’s educational mission. We are also thankful for the good friendship of Wendy Lehman Lash, granddaughter of Governor Herbert H. Lehman. Her philanthropic efforts convey the humanitarian values that inspired the College’s name, and continue to guide us. Each of them contributes uniquely to the Lehman community—a community that, thanks to your generosity and these latest, exciting developments, continues to expand far beyond our gates.
Greetings from the Lehman College Foundation
Myrna Rivera, Chair
Dear friends and supporters:
As a Lehman College alumna and Chair of the Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation Board of Trustees, I welcome you to the Foundation’s 2014 Leadership Awards Dinner. This year’s theme, "A Celebration of Excellence," is an occasion to celebrate all that sets Lehman College apart—not only from its sister CUNY colleges, but from public and private institutions everywhere. In particular, the school continues to strengthen its distinguished reputation as an innovator in STEM research, multimedia production; nursing and health sciences, information technology, and many other disciplines. Lehman is growing its K-12 educational and cultural outreach to Bronx public schools in its ongoing efforts to open doors to college and success for so many bright, but too often underserved, young people. And Lehman remains ever more dedicated to providing its culturally and economically diverse community with opportunities to learn, grow, and transform.
Lehman students know that excellence must be earned, and it takes hard work. Our task is to create an environment in which they may do that hard work and succeed. This is a formidable challenge, and there’s no room for “slacking off.” Every day, Lehman College makes the most of its resources. But this will only go so far. Every day, we must also endeavor to attract new sources of support for the College. We reach out to our friends and alumni, who understand public institutions’ need for private dollars, and understand what makes Lehman College such an exceptional center for higher education. Your generosity enables current and future students to benefit from all that Lehman can offer, and learn for themselves what “excellence” can mean.
Fredrick Gilbert, Executive Director
Thank you for taking part in the 2014 Lehman College Foundation Leadership Awards Dinner, "A Celebration of Excellence." Tonight’s event presents us with a special opportunity to celebrate two distinguished faculty members in the arts, both known for their incomparable talent, as well as their commitment to education. We also have the privilege of honoring the granddaughter of Herbert H. Lehman, whose philanthropy sustains his altruism, his humanitarian values, and the countless reasons the College is fortunate to bear his name. And finally, we recognize Lehman’s president, Ricardo R. Fernández, for his 25 years of service to the College. Under his leadership, Lehman has blossomed into an institution known for the quality of its research, teaching, and learning; its innovative programs; and its dedication to the Bronx community.
Lehman’s reputation for excellence is due in large part to the efforts of our honorees—and many others like them. The other half of this equation is Lehman’s students, whose impressive accomplishments continue to inspire and encourage us all. They are the reason for this celebration.
All proceeds from this evening—through tickets, tables, text contributions, and auction items—will support scholarships awarded through the Lehman College Foundation. I thank you for contributing to this event, as well as our staff, sponsors, and everyone working behind the scenes to make the night a success. Your participation and generosity enable students from across New York City and around the world not only to pursue excellence, but to achieve it.
