Following an orientation and open discussion session, the Commissioner, the Assistant Commissioner and Ms. Greene participated in a mini mathematics lesson taught by Professor Anne Marie Marshall. During the lesson Commissioner King played "Close to 100" a math game with the students of MATH UP Cohort 3. Commissioner King, Assistant Commissioner Wood-Garnett and Ms. Greene also visited two MATH UP partner schools, P.S. 73 and P.S. 55 along the Dean of School of Education and other MATH UP staff members. MATH UP Early College Institute 2012
Over this past summer the MATH UP Program held its second annual MATH UP Early College Institute. For two weeks in July a group of eager minded 2nd – 6th graders from our partnered school gathered in the MATH UP Math Discovery Center to learn about measurements and geometry. During the institute students participated in many activities surrounding measurement and geometry including designing and constructing their “ideal future classrooms” and taking part in a geometry scavenger hunt. All the activities were co-taught by our graduate students from Cohort 2 who received a preview of their clinical residency which begins in September 2012. The institute was also taught by our School of Education faculty member, Professor Anne Marie Marshall, two math coaches Heidi Fleischman (P.S. 55) and Khalilah Arrington (P.S. 114). This year’s Early College Institute was a great success and we look forward to next year’s.
Fraction Development in the CCSSM Grades 3-5
From August 14th – 16th a group of Bronx elementary teachers from our partnered schools along with our Cohort 2 students attended a professional development course on fraction content in the Common Core State Standard in Mathematics for grades 3-5. The course was taught by Professor Anne Marie Marshall along with Mr. Nmeregiri Nwogu, a third grade teacher from P.S. 55. All the attendees gained valuable knowledge about the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics in relation to fractions as well as techniques on how to effectively teach their students fractions as it relates to these standards.
MATH UP Summer Institute 2012
Even before the start of their clinical residency internship all the cohorts have to attend the Summer Institute. This year Cohort 2 interns, their mentor teachers, other MATH UP cooperating teachers, MATH UP faculty, partners and staff congregated in the Music Building for the week long institute. The summer institute covered topics such as the co-teaching and mentor/mentee relationship, The Framework for Teaching – Danielson Framework and professional development on mathematics. The institute also gives the interns a chance to the bond with their mentor teachers and other teachers from their schools.
Cohort 2 Gives Back!
The students of Cohort 2 participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk 2012 on October 21st in Orchard Beach, Bronx. The students completed the three mile walk while raising money for the fight against breast cancer. Our students are not only making a difference in the classrooms but in their community as well.
